Crown Nataliadrepina

– Natalia Drepina

She was in love with dying,

With dark men and hearts

Paper fine and sharp with

Designations of murder.

She courted assassins

With hinged, irreverent smiles

And tragic histories

Impassibly deep.

Her filthy hands prickled

With malignancies self-induced.

A bramble of twigs

Sewn into an unassuming chignon.

She played the widow,

She played the cello,

She rode the devil

Strait to hell.

No one was surprised

When her tombstone

Sprang up suddenly

In a bed of hyphenated roses

But they all grieved

Sensing within themselves

Similar vacancies.

One day their names would

Also be mounted in stone

Bits of snakeskin stuck

Between their meatless teeth.

  1. Amazing! Dark, brutal and a life lived on the edge. some fabulous lines … ‘With hinged irreverent smiles’ and the last two….this has to be one of my favourite poems of yours

  2. She could have been me 20 years ago. The ache. The void. Trying to find ways to fill it. And killing myself a bit at a time. Dying can be alluring, for sure.

  3. This is an absolutely stunning and gorgeously dark but thoughtfully, carefully and cleverly constructed piece that echoes strangely well inside my head – perhaps I’ve ridden the dark horse one too many times?

Great imagery captures in moments just as transient as the darkest of souls – really works with the power of the image.

    Super write Yves 😀

    • Thank you Michael having just read your submission I can say that you aren’t giving yourself nearly enough credit, your poem was beautifully written and emotionally expressive
